For my first fanfiction I've decided to do two of Tolkien's works: The Silmarillion and the Lord of The Rings.

After an introduction-to those that know nothing of Tolkien's "mythology"- a complete-though not too lengthy- inroduction would give way to a prologue written in the first person narrative by a character named Estela who looks back and remembers not only the happy, blissful and- almost- carefree childhood in the Undying lands, but is forced to leave due to a grieving, raging, almost psychotic grandfather -who also happened to be a king as well as a genius - and remembers her pain and struggle, yet
clings on to- and is a cause for hope towards her often  despairing, suffering,  and hardened parents and a cause for joy for her people when there was none.

Eruvande Estela Nelyafinwiel as she is known by her full name, is an elven princess of the Noldor elves, and close kin to Galadriel her father's - and her mother's- cousin, she is not the typical fairy princess. The House of Finwe- the house of her murdered great-grandfather- is a dysfunctional family. Shortly after the birth of her grandfather, who was destined to be the most brilliant elf that ever lived- her great-grandmother Miriel died of exhaustion brought by her son's birth- and by disturbing foresight into her son's future, it was later whispered. Her great-grandfather had remarried-to the rage of his son, and had more children. This had been a tremendous scandal, so despite the great love and affection Estela and her father had felt towards their relatives, her grandfather had never accepted their existence. So the charming elfling had grown up causing smiles and laughter, pacifying the dysfunctional family... until her grandfather was murdered and the majority of her family and her people were forced to leave their safe, heavenly home, to fight a war against Morgoth- the fallen angelic being that was powerful enough to serve as Sauron's master before his fall.

Now Sauron is attempting a rise to his fallen master's goal, to be the Dark Lord of the Earth, and Estela is no longer a happy optimistic little charmer, to the concern of those that knew her. She looks back and wonders whether this world is worth fighting for, and that hope is still worth clinging on to.
Top: Morgoth the evil Vala does battle with Fingolfin, King of the Noldor. Above Left: Estela's father, grandfather and uncles make the Oath of Feanor. Above right: Estela's cousin "Fingon" or Findekano rides to battle against the forces of Evil.

  1. Sounds good to me. Looks like you have loads to work with and to get you started. I would suggest just start writing and edit as you go and at the end, as I suspect you'll need to limit words etc.
E.g. how to do a BRIEF intro to the world? Do you need to?
You can develop the setting throughout the narrative as well, so not everything needs to be laid out at the beginning.

  5. Please incorporate this on to your draft/planning post :)
Basically it's a lot easier to manage with just 2 posts (works in progress) for each blog participant.
