character development

Right  the intro has been planned-and this was tricky. I have to remeber to put in the important details, yet not make it too lengthy. Also I can't create a "Mary Sue" as authors and fanfiction authors call such a character. The Male counterpart would be "Gary Stu", and either one of those names would mean a character who is -or almost- flawless, and who is ideal in every way, e.g The most beautiful girl in the whole world, who is also the smartest, the most talented and marries the most gorgeous guy in the end and lives happily ever after with the cutest babies. NO. They have to be flawed- even characters like Harry Potter and his friend Hermione were flawed. Edward Cullen is flawed, although Bella insists he is perfect, yet that only accentuates- to me- how flawed they both are (sorry to all Twilight fans but I'm not in love with Edward so I can see clearly!). One can come close, but can never get their characters to THAT point, tempting but no.

My character is calles Estela and although she is- admittedly a princess in the beginning and a queen at the end she is NOT Snow White or Aurora. An interesting part of her physical features is that- unlike most of the elves we see in the movies- she is red haired. She is beautiful, even by elf standards and talented, but she is NOT perfect. charming and sweet, she can get into mischief- or allows others to convince her to do so, she is later tormented and hardened and loses almost every-
one she loves, she will or will not see them again turns out in the end. At this point she turns from optimistic- but not quite pessimistic- although she wonders if she should
just give up. This would prove a very human story form a non-human perspec-
tive about climbing the way up once a person has reached rock-bottom.
Can she do it? Will she try?

The family in which she comes from- the House of Finwe- is as I've said,
a dsyfunctional one. Problem is, her great-grandmother the first queen had died
giving life to her grandfather, and her great-grandfather had remarried,
and had more children. Her grandfather- who was the most brilliant elf, as much
as the most proud and stubborn that ever lived is far from pleased.
Having had only his father to love him as a child, and still holding his late
mother in great regard, he hates to acknowledge the existence of his stepmother
and his half-siblings. Yet for many a year they had lived in a truce with only the
slightest hint of unease. Yet after creating the alphabet- The Tengwar- he
started more ambitious pursuits which would cause BIG trouble, namely
the three silmarils, the three most prized, most beautiful and most priceless
of all gems, which would only be stolen and end up the cause of a war- as well
as her great-grandfather's murder. the evil culprit is Morgoth- or Melkor
the "Lucifer of Tolkien's world" ( when I say Lucifer I mean Satan not the cat
in Disney's Cinderella). Feanaro- Estela's grandfather, would get his seven sons
including Estela's father to swear an oath to take back the Silmarils and avenge
the King no matter what the cost and if it means killing anyone who refuses to
budge aside, or comply with their wishes, including her mother's people who gets
viciously slaughtered- although little Estela does not actually see  this.

Estela's own parents, grow from happy, peaceful and content to tormented and
hardened, filled with foreboding knowledge that if they were to die in this war
against an evil which seems undefeatable, due to the dishonour caused by Estela's
grandfather and many of their kin they would likely be doomed for an eternity

The Great Eagles who you might have seen in The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit
An Unexpected Journey would appear for a while, and characters like Thorin
Oakenshield and his company, Elrond and Arwen also. Thorin is interesting
because he goes through almost the same things Estela did once, it would be
interesting to see how they both react to such similarities, and to what sort of advice
Estela gives to him. Galadriel would feature prominently, although Estela calls her
Artanis, since Galadriel is the name Artanis' husband Celeborn gave to her
when he met her. She will be pretty much the same as we know her from the books
and movies. my characters are all planned out, so please wish me luck!
