Fan Fiction Examples & Summary

Some examples of Monkey King Fan Fiction
This was a cross over Fan fic which used the four main characters, The Monkey King and Kim Possible are they two existing profiles and the writer has also introduced two others, Ron Stoppable and Monkey Fist. I found the entire fic very hard to follow and personally feel that the writer introduced too many characters. I also feel that the story line (although based around this Magical Amulet and the goal of becoming the number one monkey) was weak and lacked direction. It felt like regurgitated jargon.
This Fan Fic was structured much better, it appears that the writer has used the rule that each speaker gets a new line, I find this easier on the eyes and allows for easier reading. The Monkey king in this story was based on the Japanese version of the story so it did not provide me with many ideas for my own flick. I also felt that the writer had made good use of humor in several paragraphs. The story line was based on Dragon Ball Z and the plot centralized around that.
The writer of this Fan fic is has also centered around the Japanese version of the Monkey King without even mentioning the Monkey king within his work. It was short and I feel it lacked in building up the plot, it was just a brief account of the typical Dragon Ball Z storyline.
I found this article much more enjoyable and feel that I will be able to draw heavily upon it to help build up my own ideas. The plot was well built up and the story line followed a centralized theme. The writer has made very good use of space and expressed ideas clearly and descriptively.
This one was interesting, the writer wrote it like a sort of semi erotic fan fic. It goes through the seduction of a young girl (Echizen Ryumi) with it finally winding up being a dream, that actually happened. For me it was an amusing story and I personally feel it would be difficult to write a fan flick in such a way.

Draft One

Scene: Ancient China, Han Dynasty 100AD. The Air Dragons Palace in the clouds.

Basic Plot: Monkey King as a child in the Air dragons Palace. Been sent there to learn martial arts so that he may protect his extended family of Monkeys which all reside deep in the Sichuan forests. His master, the monk Tang Xin asks the Monkey King to visit the Air Dragon to learn from him the highest level of Kung Fu. The Monkey King was very excited to begin his training in Kung Fu and quickly asked Air Dragon when he could begin. The Air Dragon was slightly less enthusiastic and told him that they would begin there training in good time but first he required the Monkey King to spend time slapping water which was held in a large terracota bowl.

After several weeks the Monkey King became board with slapping the water and approached the Air Dragon to enquire as to when he might begin training in the Air Dragons secret Kung Fu system, but the Air Dragon simply explained to him again that he would begin learning his secret Kung Fu in good time, but more importantly for now, he had to continue slapping the water.

Now after several months the Monkey King was at the end of his rope, he again approached the Air Dragon, he quickly began to explain how he had travelled a long distance and had already spent a lot of time slapping water but why he had really come was to

Draft 2
The Monkey Kings First Lesson in Martial Arts
Characters
The Monkey King (Wu Kong)
The Jade Emperor
The Monk Tang Xin (Me)
Along time ago in Ancient China, stories abound of the legendary Monkey King and his formidable Martial Art abilities, but Wu Kong was not always so skilled in fighting. its true that Wu Kong was very gifted from a young age, and he had once saved the Jade Emperors life, that single act of valour opened the Jade Emperors eyes to his potential and eventuated into Wu Kong being sent to the White Lotus Monastery. It was in the Monastery where I first met Wu Kong, I would be tasked with the duty of teaching him real Kung fu and hopefully how to humble himself.
I can remember the day he arrived like it was yesterday. The Monastery was normally such a quiet place so when I heard all the noise I quickly went out to see what was going on. the Jade Emperor was arriving unannounced and people were running around frantically. We managed to prepare the alter room into a make shift guest house and as soon as the Emperor had entered, I was summoned.
The Head Abbot introduced me and I was requested to teach a young hero who had help save the Emperors life, he continued to explain that that same young hero was already in my training hall impatiently waiting for me.
My first impression of Wu Kong was less than flattering, it was clear that he was strong and athletic but it was his arrogant attitude which was pressed upon me. He was young at that time, his face was intricately decorated with war paint and he wore a simple monk robe. As soon as he seen me he begun pestering me about when he would be able to begin his study in Kung fu. I replied that in time he would learn real Kung fu, but first, I would need him to loosen up his muscles by lightly slapping his hands across a large terracotta bowl which was filled with water. He looked at me with a look of confusion but listen to my instructions and he immediately began lightly slapping the water.
Several months passed and Wu Kong was starting to look a little bit frustrated slapping water day in and day out. He approached me and began explaining that he had been brought here to learn real Kung fu skills, and he felt he was wasting his time loosening his muscles. He had a chip on his shoulder and was outwarldy displaying it, after all he had personally been selected to study Kung fu by the Jade Emporer himself. I softly replied to him that in time he would learn real Kung fu, but for now, I still needed him to keep slapping the water in the terracotta bowl. He reluctantly resumed his muscle loosening exercise but you could see he was not happy to do so.
A full two years passed, the seasons were changing again and the Jade Emperor would be returning to the Monastery soon. The Monks would be holding an extravagant Dinner in Honour of him and Wu Kong would be expected to demonstrate all of his new Martial Art skills. This weighed heavily on Wu Kong, his ego was completely broken at this time, he had stopped pestering me about when he would start learning real Kung fu and you could see he had all but given up, time was ticking.
On the first day of winter the Jade Emperor returned to the Monastery. The weather was reasonable fine but it was cold and most of the water around the Monastery had frozen over. Wu Kong was now extremely nervous, dinner would be served soon and afterwards it would be his turn to perform. He came to me and asked me why I didn’t teach him any real Kung fu, I told him in just a short time from now, you will understand... he dropped his head and walked away from me.
The time had finally arrived, everyone was sitting around the large dinner table and the patrons began asking Wu Kong to demonstrate what he had learnt during his time here. Wu Kong looked me directly in the eyes and said "I have not learned any Kung fu". The patrons at the table heard this and according to tradition of that time began cheering. Tradition states that the better you are at something, the more modest and humble you are, so it stood to reason that the people at the table all heard what Wu Kong said and thought he must have learnt some incredible skills. The jeered him on, "show us your Kung fu" the all began shouting.
Again Wu Kong looked directly at me and shouted, "I don’t know any Kung fu", the patrons all thought this was great, he really must have learnt some incredible skills. More people gathered around and they all started to cheer and shout. Finally Wu Kong could not stand it any longer, he slammed his hands down on the thick wooden dining table and to his surprise the table split in half. The patrons at the table were just as surprised and all jumped to their feet clapping, everyone around him began shouting, "Wow" "Wu Kong's Kung fu is incredible"!
Wu Kong turned and looked at me one more time, he had suddenly realised that slapping the water for two years was his real Kung fu training. Suddenly in a single heartbeat he realised that I had been training him the whole time. His eyes began to fill with joy and a smile broke over his face, this was not a egotistical smile, no, this was a humble smile of a high level of Kung fu, and that is my account of the Monkey Kings first lesson in Martial Arts.

I think your story was great and well thought out in my limited opinion. The only thing I could suggest is that some of the /,/ could be replaced by /./ or other forms of breaks or breaths.

Good luck and hope you start up your class's soon for we would love to join......

makes it easier for me to check in with how everyone's going if you just keep to the 2 posts e.g.
    1: Troy's fanfic planning/draft
    2: Troy's fanfic
    Thank you!

This really reminds me of how 'inter-textual' (some would say formulaic??) some of the genre is. I can see elements of so many films I've seen here - all rolled in to one!
Hard to develop more characters within the word limits of this task, but so many coudl fit in, from all sorts of previously published narratives. Good genre awareness.

Idea: When re-reading keep asking yourself why? why this action? comment? what does it communicate to the reader? Is it necessary? Clear? unclear?
